Extreme Shading

Are your solar panels shaded throughout or on certain time of the day?

Our algorithms can generally detect the proportion of energy production your system is losing due to shading. However, in cases where the shading is extreme, it becomes very difficult to distinguish energy lost due to shading from energy lost due to other faults.

Examples of possible obstacles that can cast shade onto your solar panels are:

  • surrounding trees
  • neighbouring rooftops
  • neighbouring house or buildings
  • aerial antennas

If this is the case, we will class your system as ‘underperforming’. We will always alert you if your performance changes suddenly or if your system goes offline.

To fix the system performance issue due shading, we would recommend to:

  • remove the obstacles (for example, trimming the trees)
  • relocate the obstacles (for example, relocating the aerial antennas)
  • relocate the solar panels to where it will not result in shading

Additional Note: You may notice the performance of your system worsens during Autumn and Winter. This is because the sun is lower in the sky, resulting in increased shading on your panels. During Spring and Summer the sun is more directly overhead, and you should see an improvement in your system’s performance.
