Over-voltage issues

Regulations require solar systems to shut off if the average grid voltage over any 10 minute period exceed 255V or right away at 260V.

What are the consequences of having over-voltage issues?

  • Reduced power output (in some systems)
  • Complete shutdown of system

Depending on how long the system is turned off due to the over-voltage issue, Solar Analytics will detect it either as a zero production fault or an under performance issue. In both cases, we will notify you depending on its severity.

Some examples of over voltage issues will look like on your dashboard can be seen below.

Severe over-voltage: The inverter has completely shut off as the voltage is past the threshold for extended periods of time

Moderate over-voltage: The voltage is on the edge of the threshold and the inverter is turned off for a very short period only to turn back on; thus the spiky solar profile.

  • Contact your solar installer

Show your solar installer your energy data and they will request to increase the voltage threshold. This is more of a temporary fix but is generally a much quicker resolution.

  • Contact your energy retailer

Show your energy retailer or ask if your solar installer can speak on your behalf, to contact the Distributed Network Service Provider (DNSP) to tap down the transformer for your property. This regulates the voltage but is generally takes longer to get a result.
